Small Modular Reactor Site Selection in Saskatchewan: Site Selection Risk Assessment with Focus on Surface Water Availability and Dissolved Strontium Monitoring
Currently, there is limited data on water resources in the province of Saskatchewan. Therefore, the focus of the study is a province-wide assessment of Saskatchewan to identify optimal small modular reactor (SMR) site locations that are capable of providing adequate surface water for the lifecycle of an SMR power generating facility. Reports on the current and future water related stresses in the province, completed for the Government of Saskatchewan, (along with a water risk assessment interactive map) are cross-referenced in the province-wide site assessment. Additionally, there was an assessment of the fate and transport of strontium in surface waters in natural environment conditions with objective to develop a model that will aid in monitoring of strontium. The findings are favorable in advising an infrastructure owner to perform risk assessment of the selected site(s) and a cost benefit analysis associated with the risks to determine the optimum site for SMR construction, operation and maintenance.
