SaskPower’s First Renewable Microgrid

April 2 @ 7:00 am - 9:00 am

Date: April 2, 2025

Time: 7:00 AM – 9:00 AM

Event Format: Hybrid Presentation

Location: Saskatoon, SK

Hosting Organization: Saskatchewan Energy Management Task Force (EMTF)Event Summary: The Saskatchewan Research Council (SRC) is working with SaskPower to build SaskPower’s first community-scale renewable microgrid approximately 7 hours north of Saskatoon in Descharme Lake, SK. The hybrid system includes 234-kW of photovoltaics, 492-kWh of lithium-ion battery storage and multiple redundancies to maintain a highly reliable power supply to the community, and is currently being installed. The remotely-controlled system is expected to increase resiliency, reach 85% renewable penetration and yield a payback of about 3 – 4 years compared to the existing 95-km single phase line that currently powers the community. Ryan Jansen will be providing the presentation and will take you through the design, efficiencies, and redundancies of the microgrid.
